When I first took over this ad account, the return on ad spend (ROAS) was barely breaking even. The budget was being spent widely across cold audiences, with no clear retargeting layer to catch warm leads who were almost ready to convert.
Most of the spend was going toward top-of-funnel awareness campaigns, but there was no structured way to bring warm traffic back. People were clicking, browsing, and leaving — and the account had no system to re-engage them before they forgot about the brand entirely.
I restructured the campaign into three clear layers: cold audience prospecting, warm retargeting (website visitors and video viewers), and hot retargeting (cart abandoners and lead form openers). Each layer had its own creative angle and messaging, tailored to where that person was in their decision process.
I also set up the Conversions API alongside the standard Pixel, which meant more accurate tracking even with iOS privacy restrictions — giving Meta's algorithm better signal to optimize toward real conversions instead of guesses.
Within a few weeks, the retargeting layer alone was driving a return on ad spend of roughly 80x, while overall cost per lead dropped significantly across the account. The biggest lesson: sometimes the fix isn't a bigger budget — it's smarter structure.
